As i mentioned in the first installment, my interpretation of field recording based works, is very broad however, there is a thread I like to follow, it is to find  artists who have mastered  their unique identity through the music of sound.

I chose to open and close this evening’s program with Mika Vainio’s Behind the Radiators released as part of Touch Sevens series, a 7″ vinyl releases only on Touch Music.

Sackville 07.28.2009 – Simulcast

Presented by the Montréal-based organization Silophone in association with CHMA 106.9 FM (Sackville), Ok.Quoi?! Arts Frestival (Sackville), & free103point9.org ( New York State).

SIMULCAST 2.0 : Sackville is a month-long radio art series about listening to  radio at night and exploring radio’s links with eternity. Four Canadian sound and radio artists are asked to provide a single, unchanging sound, which will broadcast continuously for four hours each night on Sackville’s campus/community radio station CHMA-FM  106.9. SIMULCAST 2.0 begins at 2 am on July 28, 2009. At 6 am on  August 24, 2009, after the twenty-eighth night, the series will have completed and CHMA’s regular programming will resume. Featuring sounds  by Hélène Prévost, Mario Gauthier, i8u and Stéphane Claude.”

In composing “still life”, I  recalled a fascinating experience during a recent stay on the Frioul archipelago, near Marseilles.  While walking and recording sounds for various projects, I noticed a snail on the steps leading to my studio. Everyday I walked up and down those steps; I was constantly excited at the prospect of observing the progress this snail would manage.   It was very cold and it looked to me as if the snail wasn’t moving at all.  My enjoyment of the snail was the surreal concept that I could not observe its immediate progress but was aware of it by gauging how much progress it had made each day.

This project being in line with the minimal aesthetic I am interested in of late, i have decided  to approach the sound of imperceptible change as audio “still life” .

In today’s connected world we have many new methods of collaborating,
and many technical and artistic problems that arise in the process.

These two artists bring this chasm into focus and explore the
possibilities given by these constraints.

This project intersects i8u’s minimal yet powerful sound sculptures and
CHiKA’s geometric minimalist patterns to create a work that expresses
the examination and limitations of itself.

France Jobin aka i8u is a sound/installation/web artist whose work has been released on ROOM40 (AUS), nvo (AU) and recently, a collaboration with Tomas Phillips on ATAK (JP). She has worked with Goem, Martin Tétreault and David Kristian.

CHiKA is a live media artist working in the international VJ and experimental music scene. Her performances vary from minimalist geometric patterns to unique compositions overflowing with a variety of forms and color.

The many factions of dub converge onto one large stage to showcase just how far Jamaica’s roots reggae templates have evolved toward new genres in the hands of some of today’s hottest names.

None other than Skull Disco co-founder APPLEBLIM comes to Montreal for his Canadian debut and a DJ set that showcases the many point sof fusion between UK dubstep and Berlin techno. A seamless blend of echoes, bass, and delays leads us to the heavily anticipated collaboration between Canadian dub-don DEADBEAT and Berlin’s master vocalist of all things dub, PAUL ST. HILAIRE . The collaboration is something of a natural selection for MUTEK, given Deadbeat’s longstanding participation with MUTEK, and the fact that St. Hilaire has also performed at MUTEK events several times over the decade.

Next up, MODESELEKTOR and APPARAT join forces for the Canadian premiere of MODERAT , a stunning live audio-visual production accompanied by the striking video work of PFADFINDEREI . Again, MUTEK has a long history with both acts, as Apparat first appeared here in 2005 and Modeselektor performed here in 2006 and 2008.

And finally, the night winds to a tailspin with the breakneck dubstep assault of the Digital Mystiks’ MALA , in town for a Canadian debut DJ set.

Meanwhile, the SAVOY ROOM fills with the ambient soundscapes of EZEKIEL HONIG , CLINKER , I8U , NOVI_SAD , and AUN .

The sound of music, my favorite things, John Coltrane, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, de Bussy, Satie, Penderezky, the list goes on, but basically, all these artists have a sound, it is unmistakable.

What John Coltrane does with his interpretation of my favorite things, is what i try to do with my own work, i try to do with textures, what he does with notes. The way he interprets the melody, flowing with incredible precision and musicality, i find very inspiring.

When i prepared this program, i tried to take this further, looking for different processes of interpretation and looking for artists who have mastered their unique identity through the music of sound.

“these are few of my favorite things” (1st installment)

My interpretation of field recording based works is very broad, however , i can tell you what influences me with my work and hope this gives you a hint as to how i came to choose the pieces you will hear.

The sound of music, my favorite things, John Coltrane, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, de Bussy, Satie, Penderezky, the list goes on, but basically, all these artists have a sound, it is unmistakable.

What John Coltrane does with his interpretation of my favorite things, is what i try to do with my own work, i try to do with textures, what he does with notes. The way he interprets the melody, flowing with incredible precision and musicality, i find very inspiring.

When i prepared this program, i tried to take this further, looking for different processes of interpretation and looking for artists who have mastered their unique identity through the music of sound.
